Information
At the heart of the Cévennes National Park, registered with UNESCO, were built patiently and courageously terraces called "bancels". These Cevennes books are a reflection of a very harsh reality. Initially, they were cut, shaped by generations of farmers to cultivate, on the mountainside, the vineyard, the olive, fodder or cereals before the cooling of the climate of the sixteenth century. After this period, the cultivation of the chestnut developed at the same time as that of the mulberry tree. It was a man-made job, from building walls to harvesting productions. It was necessary to constantly rearrange the bancels after the violent episodes of Cevennes rain.
